The Comitas Award For Social Innovation And Public Engagement

The Comitas Award for Social Innovation and Public Engagement honors outstanding studies and applications of ethnographic research that elevate public awareness of anthropology’s role in addressing contemporary human and social challenges. Named in tribute to Lambros Comitas, the award is a collaboration between the Comitas Institute for Anthropological Study (CIFAS) and the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA).

  • Award Focus
    This $3,000 cash prize honors anthropological research that:                                                      

    • Proposed culturally informed solutions for creative and impactful change.
    • Is rooted in rigorous ethnographic fieldwork.
    • Enhances public understanding of anthropology’s contributions to solving human and social challenges worldwide.
  • Award Selection Criteria
    Projects will be evaluated based on their demonstrable public impact, which may include:

    • Evidence of media attention, public engagement, economic improvement, or the implementation of social justice initiatives.
    • Effective public communication efforts, such as YouTube channels, films, documentaries, public exhibitions, books, magazine articles, television or radio programs, and podcasts.
    • Tangible outcomes, such as policy changes or practical improvements that benefit human communities and social institutions.
  • Submissions
    Submissions should be sent toinfo@appliedanthro.org and must include: 

    1. Project Description: A detailed account of the project’s rationale, field methods, participants, and results.
    2. Statement of Impact: A summary highlighting the project’s significance, supported by supplementary materials such as online media links, videos, photographs, news articles, or other relevant documents.
    3. Evaluation Criteria: Documentation addressing:Impact on human and community well-being.Innovation in public engagement and communication.Creativity in leveraging media and technology.
    4. Future Relevance: A discussion of how the research contributes to preparing future anthropologists.
    5. Supplementary Data: Additional materials, including videos, photos, and other creative assets, to strengthen the submission are welcomed.
